باران اسیدی- به دلیل انتشار سولفور دی اکسید و نیتروژن دی اکسید- مسبب خسارت به درختان، ساختمانها و  بدنه آبی در در سرتاسر اروپا در دهه 1970 شده است. از آن به بعد، دولتمردان در اروپا و آمریکا تلاش قابل توجهی برای کاهش انتشار سولفور دی اکسید به اتمسفر  از صنعت با نتایج مثبتی انجام داده اند.

Acid rain - caused by emissions of sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides – resulted in  damage to trees, buildings and water bodies across Europe in the 1970’s. Since then, governments in Europe and the US have made significant efforts to reduce the release of sulphur dioxide into the atmosphere from industry with positive results
